National identification and other marks
Coats of Arms of Australia
The coat of arms of Australia used from 1908-1912 consists of a central escutcheon decorated with the Cross of St. George with five six-pointed stars on the cross. Around the edges are 6 smaller escutcheons. The crest is the 7-pointed Commonwealth Star (six for every state and one for future states). The supporters are a red kangaroo and an emu with a raised leg standing on a patch of grass. The banner bears the motto: "ADVANCE AUSTRALIA".
In 1912 the King adopted the current coat of arms of Australia. It consists of a central escutcheon, which is decorated with the badges of the states (clockwise starting top left: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania, Western Australia, South Australia. The border is decorated with ermine. The red kangaroo and emu still support the escutcheon, as native animals. Above the whole a seven-pointed star (Commonwealth Star) is placed representing the six states and the country as a whole. The bottom is decorated with Golden Wattle and a banner with the text "AUSTRALIA". The background is decorated with Golden Wattle, the national floral emblem.
Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom
The coat of arms of the United Kingdom consists of an escutcheon divided in 4 parts with a crown on top. The four parts are decorated with a harp (symbolizing the separated Ireland), three passant guardant lions (symbolizing England) and a single rampant lion (symbolizing Scotland).
