The national embelm of the Kingdom of Afghanistan (1931-1973) shows a mosque with a minrab (preaching stand) and two flags on either side. Ears of wheat (symbolizing agriculture) form a wreath and are bound together by a banner. On the banner the text "افغانستان" (Afghanistan).
The national emblem of the Republic of Afghanistan (1794-1978) consists of two ears of wheat (symbolizing agriculture) which are connected at the bottom by a banner with the texts "د افغانستان جمهوریت" (The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan), "۱۳۵۷" (1352, year of founding) and "۲۸ چنګاښ" (April, 28th, date of revolution). On the chest of the eagle a Mehrab (niche in the wall of a mosque) and minbar (preaching stand) are depicted. A rising sun symbolizes the rising of a new republic.
The national emblem of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (1978-1980) consists of the name khalq faction: خلق. On top a five-pointed star symbolizes the five nations. The banner below sais: "۱۳۵۷ د ثور انقلاب" (The Revolution of April 1978) and "افخانستان دموکراتيک جمبريت" (The Democratic Republic of Afghanistan).
The national emblem of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (1980-1987) consists of a rising sun above a mihrab. Communist symbols are the star, wheel and Marx' book 'Das Kapital'. Ears of grain form a wreath around the emblem, bound together by the national flag.
The national emblem of the Islamic State of Afghanistan (1992-1996) looks a lot like that of the Kingdom. It consists of a mosque with mihrab facing Mecca. Inside the mosque is a minrab (preaching stand). Above the mosque is a Arabic scripture from the shahadah "لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا الله مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ الله" (There is no god but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God). Below the mosque the year 1371 (۱۳۷۱). The whole is surrounded by a wreath which is surrounded by two half swords. In the bottom part of the wreath the text "افغانستان", meaning Afghanistan. Although the emblem was only used until 1996, it can also be found on coins with younger years.
