Coat of arms of the Portuguese Colony of Angola
The coat of arms of the Portuguese Colony of Angola between 1935 and 1975 consists of a central escutcheon decorated with the 5 shields with 5 coins each (representing Portugal) to the right and an elephant and zebra (representing Angola) to the left. The waves at the bottom represent the sea, as Angola is an overseas territory of Portugal. The armillary sphere crowned with 5 towers and 4 escutcheons carries the coat of arms.
Badge of the Colonial Empire
The bade of the colonial empire of Portugal consists of a silver shield with the quinas: 5 blue shields in a form of a cross each with 5 bezants (coins) placed in a form of a cross. Around the silver shield a red border with 7 golden castles with blue (open) gates is shown. This shield can also be seen on the national flag of Portugal. Underneath the shield the armillary sphere and the Cross of the Order of Christ.
National emblem
The national emblem of Angola consists of an open book symbolizing education. Above the book the sun rises with its rays superimposed by a machete and a hoe. The machete, hoe and sun symbolize the importance of the revolution and agriculture. A circle is formed by a cogwheel, a cotton plant and a coffee plant, each symbolizing an important industry of the country. The banner at the bottom says: "REPÚBLICA DE ANGOLA", which means 'Republic of Angola'.
