Coats of Arms
The coat of arms of the Kingdom of Bulgaria (1887-1927) consists of an escutcheon decorated with a rampant lion. On top of the escutcheon the diamond crown sits.
The national coat of arms of the People's Republic of Bulgaria (1971-1990) consists of a central rampant lion standing on a cog wheel. The lion is flanked by ears of wheat bound together by a ribbon at the bottom. The ribbon is decorated with the lines of the flag and the text: "681 1944", whereas the year 681 stands for the formation of the first Bulgarian Empire and the year 1944 stands for the year of the coup d'état. A five-pointed star sits on top of the whole.
