Coat of Arms
The coat of arms of Costa Rica consists of an escutcheon decorated with three volcanoes, a valley and the ocean in the front and in the back (the Pacific and the Caribbean Ocean). On both oceans merchant ships sail and the sun rises in the distant ocean. Seven stars above the volcanoes represent the seven provinces of the nation. A banner on top says: "REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA", the official name of the country. Palmleaves decorate the banner. The frame around the escutcheon is decorated with beads, representing coffee, an important agricultural product. On top a ribbon with text says: "AMERICA CENTRAL", referring to the nations geographical position and history.
