Coats of arms
The national coat of arms of Hungary, as it was used from 1867 until 1918, consists of a central escutcheon supported by two angels. The escutcheon is decorated with 6 sections. The top right section depicts 3 lions heads with crown (symbolizing Dalmatia), the top left section depicts a field with squares (symbolizing Croatia). The lower part from right to left: wavy bars with a marten and a six-pointed star (for Esclavonia), a water pouring double-headed eagle with a crown on top and the sea below (for Fiume) and an eagle with sun and crescent above 7 towers (for Transylvania). In the middle an escutcheon decorated with the old (8 bars) and the new (double cross on hill) coat of arms of Hungary. The crown on top is St. Stephen's crown.
The coat of arms of Hungary, as it was used between 1949 and 1956 consists of a central hammer crossed with an ear of wheat (symbols of labour and agriculture) flanked by more ears of wheat superceded by a 5-pointed shining star (socialistic star). Below there is a banner decorated with the colors of the flag.
The national coat of arms of Hungary, as it was used from 1957 until 1990, consists of an escutcheon decorated with the colours of the flag. The escutcheon is surrounded by ears of wheat held together by two ribbons, one decorated with the national colours. A socialistic star radiates from the top.
The national coat of arms of Hungary, as it was used as of 1990, consists of an escutcheon decorated with Árpád stripes on the right (where the smooth bars stand for rivers) and a double cross in a crown on a mountain on the left. The mountains are Tátra, Mátra and Fátra. On top of the escutcheon sits the Holy Crown of Hungary (Szent Korona).
