Coat of Arms
The national coat of arms of Malawi consists of an escutcheon decorated with three sections. The upper section shows waves, the middle section a walking lion (from the English coat of arms) and the lower section a rising sun. On top of the escutcheon a helmet is decorated with a rising sun over waves and a rising eagle. The waves (on the shield and above the helmet) represent lake Malawi. The rising sun symbolizes the dawn of freedom and independence of African states. The supporters of the escutcheon are a lion and a leopard standing on a mountain range (Mulanje massif). The national motto decorates a banner: "UNITY AND FREEDOM".
