Coat of arms
The coat of arms of Panama centrally depicts an escutcheon decorated with 5 sections. The top left section show a shovel and a hoe crossed (symbolizing labour). The top right section show a hanging rifle and longsword crossed (symbolizing the end of the civil war). The middle section shows an isthmus with the descending sun and ascending moon above it. On the bottom the left section shows a winged wheel (symbolizing progress) and the right section shows a cornucopia (symbolizing wealth). Above the escutcheon an eagle with spread wings (symbolizing sovereignty) holds a banner with the text: "PRO MUNDI BENEFICIO", which means 'For the Benefit of the World'. Above the eagle 9 stars symbolize each province of the country. Four national flags with spears flank the escutcheon.
