Coat of Arms
The national coat of arms of South Africa as it was used from 1910 to 2000 consists of a central escutcheon divided into four parts. The top left part shows a woman with anchor (Cape Province), the top right part shows two wildebeast (Natal Province). The lower parts show an orange tree on the left (Orange Free State Province) and an ox wagon on the right (Transvaal Province). The crest is a lion holding four bound sticks (strength). The supporters are a springbok and an antelope. Below are a patch of grass with two flowering Proteas (sugarbush) and a ribbon with the motto "EX UNITATE VIRES" (English: Unity is Strength) depicted.
The national coat of arms of South Africa, adopted in 2000, consists of a escutcheon decorated with two human figures representing San people holding hands. Above the shield a spear is crossed with a knobkierrie. On the chest of a secretary bird with wings spread a design of a protea flower is placed. Above the bird the sun rises. The whole is supported by two tusks and an ear of grain on each side. The banner at the bottom says: "!KE E: /XARRA //KE" ('diverse people unite' in the Koisan language.)
