The coat of arms of Tanzania consists of a shield, two supporters and a motto. The escutcheon is divided by 4 decorations. The upper quarter is golden en shows a torch symbolizing freedom (Uhuru in Swahili), enlightenment and knowledge. The second quarter show the flag of Tanzania. The third part is red (symbolizing the fertile ground of Tanzania). The lowest part shows waves which symbolize the sea, lakes and shore lines. In front of the shield a spear symbolizes the defence for freedom, the axe and hoe for the tools used on the land. The supporters (a man and a woman) hold two elephant tusks and stand on Mount Kilimanjaro with a clover (man) and cotton (woman) bush at their feet. In front of the mountain the banner says: "UHURU NA UMOJA" which means "Freedom and unity" in Swahili.
