Coat of arms
The coat of arms of Trinidad and Tobago roughly consists of a shield, two supporters and a motto. The shield is decorated with the colors of the national flag. The golden ships are the Santa María, La Niña and La Pinta of Christopher Columbus used on his journey iich led to the discovery of the Americas. Above the ships are two hummingbirds as a symbol of Trinidad. The palm tree at the top is a symbol of Tobago, which was on its coat of arms before conjoining. The crown symbolizes the United Kingdom which colonized the islands before gaining independence. The supporters are a scarlet ibis and an cocrico which are the national birds. Three hills can be seen underneath ibis which are the Trinity Hills of Trinidad. The island emerging from the water underneath the cocrico represents Tobago. The motto says: "TOGETHER WE ASPIRE, TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE".
