Coat of Arms
The coat of arms of Croatia consists of a main shield decorated with a red and white šahovnica (chess board). On top of the main shield five smaller shields are placed representing 5 historical regions of Croatia: the most left shield is decorated with a star (morning star) and moon (oldest coat of arms known of Croatia), then a coat of arms of Ragusa with two red stripes. The third shield is of Dalmatia with 3 crowned leopards derived from the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The coat of arms of Istria is the fourth shield which shows a goat. The last shield shows two stripes (the rivers Drava and Sava) with a marten in between (the Croatian word for marten is kuna, just like the name of the currency). Above the marten a star is placed.
