National Emblem
The national emblem of Guinea-Bissau consists of two olive branches with a shell at their base. The shell symbolizes the location on the coast of Africa. A five-pointed star has an important position in pan-African symbolism. The banner says: "UNIDADE LUTA PROGRESSO" which is Portuguese for 'Unity', 'Struggle' and 'Progress'.
