National Coat of Arms of Maldives

The national coat of arms shows a coconut palm tree in the centre. The crescent and star symbolize Islam, the national religion. On each side the Maldivian flag is signing sideways. The banner says: "الدولة المحلديبية" which means: "State of the Mahal Dibiyat". Mahal Dibiyat is the name given to the islands by medieval Arab travellers.

Laari in Dhivehi: "ލާރި"

The laari is a hundredth (1/100) of the Maldivian rufiyaa. The name is derived from the city Lar (nowadays Iran) which used the name first for silver wire-shaped coins.
