Coat of arms
The coat of arms of Latvia consists of an escutcheon decorated with three images and three 5-pointed stars on top. The sun in the upper half is a reference to the Imperial Russian Army's Latvian Riflemen during World War I. The seventeen rays represent the districts of Latvia. The lower half is divided in two and shows a lion, the lion of Courland (Kurzeme and Zemgale), and a griffin of Livonia (Vidzeme and Latgale). The three stars represent the three provinces Latgale, Vidzeme and Kurzeme-Zemgale.
