The Royal Mint
History & DescriptionThe "PL" mintmark was only used for a brief period of time in recent history. Due to undercapacity of the mint in Melbourne (AUS) the Royal Mint of London minted a relatively small amount of Australian 1/2 penny, 1 penny, 3 pence and 6 pence. They were of better quality than their Australian counterparts. It is not known where the choice for these two letters is based upon. Speculations point to "pecunia londinii" (money of London) or "Percussa Londinensis" (struck at London).
