Karel Martens (NLD): "KM"Martens (1939) is a Dutch graphic designer and teacher. His work ranges from post stamps, books, architectural interventions to free artistic work. He taught at the Art Academy in Arnhem (NL), Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht (NL), from 1997 he has been a visiting lecturer in the graphic design department at the School of Art, Yale University. In 1997 he started Werkplaats Typografie, a post-graduate graphic design school in Arnhem, where he still teaches. In 2003 he designed the 5 euro commemorative coin which commemorates the 150th birthday of famous Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh.

Michiels (1973) is a Belgium born visual artist and architect. He studied in Leuven (B) and Amsterdam (NL). He entered a competition to design the new commemorative 5 euro coin for the Netherlands with an architecture theme. He won the competition by using free software only. He used names of famous dutch architects to circle around forming a spiral and the effigy of the Queen. In the centre his initials can be seen.

Coats of Arms
The Small Royal Coat of Arms shows a shield with or without golden blocks. On the shield a crowned lion is placed with in it's right raised claw a sword and in his right claw seven arrows, symbolizing the seven provinces united in the Union of Utrecht. The shield wears the Royal crown.

Acorn
The acorn was a mark used on Dutch coins during the German occupation during World War II (1941 - 1945). More specifically, they were used to identify the coins which were minted to be used in the mainland territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Netherlands itself. The mark symbolizes the fruit of a typical tree of the country. The coinage for the overseas territories were marked with a palm tree.

Palm Tree
The palm tree was a mark used on Dutch coins during the German occupation during World War II (1941 - 1945). More specifically, they were used to identify the coins which were minted to be used in the overseas territories of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. These territories were the Netherlands East Indies, Suriname and the former Netherlands Antilles (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, St. Martin (St. Maarten), St. Eustacius and Saba.) The mark symbolizes a tree often seen on tropical islands. The coinage for the mainland of the Netherlands is marked with an acorn.
